## About Miss Megan
Meet Miss Megan!
Photographer. Educator. Adventure-seeker.
Hi there! I'm Miss Megan — a professional photographer and educator who has been capturing big smiles and incredible moments for years. I have taught photography to kids and teens at the local Boys and Girls Club, through co-ops, and in private workshops, and watching a child see their world differently through a viewfinder is still my absolute favorite thing.

My Little Lenses course was born from those real classroom moments — built with the exact lesson plans, worksheets, card games, and activities I've used with real students. Everything in this course is tried, tested, and kid-approved!

When I'm not teaching, you can find me behind the lens at my portrait studio, **Boudieful**, where I specialize in boudoir and empowerment photography for adults. My mission is simple: help every person — young or old — see how beautiful and creative they truly are.

| The Exposure Triangle (Kid-ified) | While we teach kids about 'sunglasses' and 'blinking eyes', they are actually learning the Exposure Triangle: ISO (sensor sensitivity), Aperture (depth of field & light intake), and Shutter Speed (motion blur). This foundation sets them up for full manual shooting later. | When they struggle with blurry photos, ask them to check their 'camera's blink' (shutter speed) rather than getting technical. | :icon-triangle: |
| The 3 Kings Game Logic | The interactive memory game isn't just for fun—it reinforces the relationships between F-stops, fractions of a second, and ISO numbers. By memorizing these pairs visually, the math becomes intuitive rather than intimidating. | Play the game with them! Ask them why f/1.4 lets in more light than f/8 to spark a deeper conversation. | :icon-gamepad-2: |
| Guiding the Stop-Motion Module | Stop-motion requires immense patience and teaches sequential thinking and planning. It's a fantastic exercise in stable camera positioning (using tripods) and consistent lighting. | Help them tape their phone or camera to a stable surface. The biggest challenge in stop-motion is accidental camera bumps. | :icon-video: |
| Constructive Critiques | Kids are sensitive about their art. The goal of the project modules is to build confidence, not perfection. We focus on 'what's working' before discussing 'what could be improved'. | Use the 'Sandwich Method': compliment their framing, suggest a slight lighting tweak, and praise their creative idea. | :icon-message-circle: |
| Navigating Online Safety | With cameras connecting directly to the internet, online safety is crucial. Our bonus Internet & Gaming Safety Course teaches digital citizenship, safe photo sharing, and cyberbullying defense. | Review the safety module together and set clear rules about what photos are okay to share on gaming platforms like Roblox. | :icon-shield-check: |

| Year | Camera Era | Description | Camera Image |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1839 | The Daguerreotype | The first cameras! It took minutes to take a single photo, so people had to sit perfectly still like statues. No smiling allowed! | ![image](https://d6yvfl55smr7u.cloudfront.net/assets/zadcnbtn-1774993422288-photo-1510127034890-ba27508e9f1c.jpg) |
| 1900 | The Brownie | The first camera for kids! It cost $1 and made photography available to everyone, not just scientists in labs. | ![image](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1555661530-68c8e9fa88cb?q=80&w=800&auto=format&fit=crop) |
| 1970 | Film SLRs | These cameras used rolls of colorful film. You couldn't see the photo right away—you had to drop the film off at a store and wait days! | ![image](https://d6yvfl55smr7u.cloudfront.net/assets/ub0t8yfp-1774993422300-photo-1516961642265-531546e84af2.jpg) |

| Mode | Description | Icon |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Portrait Mode (The Head Symbol) | Makes your subject super sharp while beautifully blurring out the background. Perfect for taking pictures of your friends, family, or even your pet! Fun fact: This uses a 'wide aperture' to create that dreamy blur! | :icon-user: |
| Landscape Mode (The Mountain Symbol) | Keeps absolutely everything from the grass at your feet to the distant mountains perfectly in focus. Use this when you want to capture a huge, epic scene on a family hike! | :icon-image: |
| Sports / Action Mode (The Running Person) | Uses a super-fast 'shutter speed' (like a super fast blink!) to freeze action in its tracks. Great for capturing a running dog, a soccer goal, or a splash in the pool without any blur! | :icon-activity: |
| Macro Mode (The Little Flower) | Lets you get super close to tiny things like bugs, coins, and flower petals to see incredible hidden details that your eyes might even miss. It's like having a microscope in your camera! | :icon-zoom-in: |
| Night Portrait (The Person & Moon) | Uses a tiny pop of flash to light up your friend in the dark, plus a slow shutter to capture the cool glowing city lights or stars behind them. Magic in the moonlight! | :icon-moon: |
| Auto Mode (The Green Box / 'A') | The camera's brain takes over! It guesses what you are looking at and picks all the settings for you. It's a great place to start when you are just learning how to point and shoot! | :icon-camera: |

## The 3 Kings Lessons
The 3 Kings of Photography 👑
Meet the three magical settings that control your camera!
| King Name | Kid Alias | Description | Color (Hex) | Icon |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| King ISO | The Sunglasses 🕶️ | ISO tells the camera how sensitive it should be to light. High ISO is like taking off your sunglasses in the dark to see better! But careful, it can get grainy (noisy)! | #FFD166 | :icon-sun: |
| King Aperture | The Pupil 👀 | Just like your eye's pupil gets big in the dark and small in the sun! A big pupil (low f-number) makes the background blurry and magical. | #06D6A0 | :icon-aperture: |
| King Shutter Speed | The Blinker ⚡ | How fast the camera blinks! A fast blink freezes action like a superhero. A slow blink captures a blur of movement. | #EF476F | :icon-clock: |

Pro Tip
| Rule Name | Description | Fun Tip | Icon | Color | Demo Type |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rule of Thirds | Imagine a tic-tac-toe board on your photo. Place your subject where the lines intersect instead of dead center! | Most cameras have a grid you can turn on — use it! | :icon-grid-3x3: | #EF476F | thirds |
| Leading Lines | Use roads, fences, or rivers to draw the viewer's eye straight toward your main subject. | Train tracks, hallways, and stairways make great leading lines! | :icon-move-right: | #118AB2 | lines |
| Framing | Use trees, windows, or doorways as a natural picture frame around your subject to add depth. | Peeking through a hole or arch makes your subject pop! | :icon-frame: | #06D6A0 | framing |
| Creative Angles | Don't just shoot from eye level! Get down low for a worm's-eye view or up high for a bird's-eye view. | Lie on the ground and shoot up to make your subject look HUGE! | :icon-flip-vertical: | #FFD166 | angles |

Pro Tip
| Lesson | Description | Icon | Pro Tip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The Golden Hour | The hour right after sunrise and right before sunset gives everything a magical, warm, and soft golden glow. It's the best time to shoot outdoors! | :icon-sunset: | Position your subject with the sun BEHIND them for a glowing halo effect in their hair! |
| Hard vs. Soft Light | A bright sunny day creates 'hard light' with dark, sharp shadows. A cloudy day creates 'soft light' where shadows are blurry and gentle. | :icon-cloud-sun: | If the sun is too harsh, move your subject under a tree or into the shade for instant soft light. |
| Window Light | Indoors? Turn off the lamps and place your subject next to a big window. It creates beautiful, natural, directional lighting for portraits. | :icon-app-window: | Have your subject turn their face slightly TOWARD the window to catch beautiful sparkling 'catchlights' in their eyes. |
| Bouncing Light | Use a white piece of foam board (a reflector) to bounce window light back onto the shadowed side of your subject's face. | :icon-split-square-horizontal: | You don't need a fancy reflector! A white poster board, a white towel, or even wearing a white shirt works perfectly! |

| Topic | Emoji | Flash's Hint | Color |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| What is ISO? | 😎 | ISO is like your camera's sunglasses! A LOW number (like 100) means bright sunny day — keep the shades on! A HIGH number (like 3200) means it's super dark — take the sunglasses OFF so your camera can see better. But watch out — high ISO can make your photo look grainy, like sand got in it! | #FFD166 |
| What is Aperture? | 👁️ | Aperture is like your EYE! When you go into a dark room, your pupils get BIG to let in more light. When it's super bright outside, your pupils get tiny. A low f-number (like f/1.8) means a BIG opening — lots of light! A high f-number (like f/16) means a TINY opening — less light. Big opening also blurs the background — that's called 'bokeh'! | #EF476F |
| What is Shutter Speed? | 👁️‍🗨️ | Shutter speed is how fast your camera BLINKS! A super fast blink (like 1/1000 second) FREEZES things — perfect for catching a dog mid-jump! A slow blink (like 1/30 second) creates blur — you can make waterfalls look silky smooth! Fast blink = frozen action. Slow blink = dreamy blur. | #118AB2 |
| Rule of Thirds | 🎯 | Imagine your photo has a tic-tac-toe grid on it — 9 squares total. Don't put your subject RIGHT in the middle! Instead, place them at one of the four corners where the lines cross. This makes your photo feel more interesting and balanced. It's the most important trick in all of photography! | #06D6A0 |
| What is Depth of Field? | 🌸 | Depth of field is how much of your photo is in focus. SHALLOW depth of field = only the flower in focus, background is blurry. DEEP depth of field = EVERYTHING is sharp, even the mountains far away! Use a low f-number for blurry backgrounds. Use a high f-number when you want everything sharp. | #9B5DE5 |
| Golden Hour Light | 🌅 | The BEST time to take photos is during 'Golden Hour' — the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The light turns golden and warm, shadows get long and dramatic, and EVERYTHING looks magical. It's like the world puts on its best outfit for an hour. Set an alarm — it goes fast! | #FF9F1C |
| Why are photos blurry? | 🤔 | Blurry photos happen for 3 reasons: 1) Camera shake — you moved while shooting! Try holding your breath or leaning against a wall. 2) Subject moved — your shutter speed was too slow! Speed it up. 3) Wrong focus — did you tap on what you wanted in focus? Always tap the screen on the most important thing! | #EF476F |
| What is White Balance? | 🌈 | White balance makes sure white things LOOK white in your photo! Light from the sun is warm and orange. Light from indoor bulbs is yellow. Cloudy day light is cool and blue. If your photos look too orange or too blue, adjust your white balance! On a phone, tap and hold on a white area — it auto-corrects! | #118AB2 |

| Aperture | 👁️ | The opening inside your camera lens — like a pupil in your eye! A BIG opening (low f-number) lets in lots of light and blurs the background. A TINY opening (high f-number) keeps everything sharp. | #EF476F | aperture |
| Shutter Speed | ⚡ | How fast your camera blinks! A FAST shutter freezes moving things like a jumping dog. A SLOW shutter creates beautiful blur — like turning a waterfall into smooth, silky water. | #118AB2 | shutter |
| ISO | 😎 | Your camera's light sensitivity — like sunglasses! Low ISO = bright day, sunglasses ON. High ISO = dark room, sunglasses OFF. But high ISO can cause grain (called 'noise') in your photo. | #FFD166 | iso |
| Bokeh | 🌸 | The beautiful blurry circles you see in the background of a portrait! Pronounced 'BOH-keh'. You get bokeh by using a large aperture (small f-number). It makes your subject pop like magic! | #9B5DE5 | bokeh |
| Exposure | 💡 | How bright or dark your photo is! Controlled by three things: ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed — the Exposure Triangle! Too bright = overexposed. Too dark = underexposed. Just right = perfect exposure! | #FF9F1C | exposure |
| Focal Length | 🔭 | How zoomed in your lens is, measured in millimeters. A 50mm lens sees like your eye. A 200mm lens zooms in super close like binoculars. A 16mm lens sees super wide — great for landscapes and big groups! | #06D6A0 | focal |
| White Balance | 🌈 | Makes sure white things look truly WHITE in your photo! Different lights have different colors — sunlight is warm, indoor bulbs are orange-yellow, cloudy days are cool blue. White balance fixes all that! | #EF476F | whitebalance |
| Depth of Field | 📐 | How much of your photo is in sharp focus. SHALLOW = only your subject is sharp, background is blurry. DEEP = everything from close to far is sharp. Perfect for landscapes or group photos! | #118AB2 | dof |

## AI & Photography
New for 2025
AI & Photography
Artificial Intelligence is changing photography forever. Let's learn how to use it — and how to spot when it's being used on us!
What is AI in Photos?
AI Superpowers
Spot the Fake!
Be Ethical
Real Photo
Taken by a photographer with a camera — captures an actual moment in real life.
AI-Generated
Created by a computer from text descriptions — the scene never actually existed.
Tap to reveal clue
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence
AI is a computer program that has 'learned' by looking at billions of photographs. It can now create brand-new, realistic-looking images from just a text description — like asking it to draw 'a cat wearing a spacesuit on Mars' and getting a photorealistic result in seconds.

This is both incredibly exciting AND something every young photographer needs to understand, because AI images are now everywhere — on social media, in the news, and in advertising.
| AI Tool | What It Does | Icon | Color |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Background Remover | AI can instantly cut out your subject from any background — no green screen needed! Adobe uses this in Lightroom and Photoshop. | :icon-scissors: | #118AB2 |
| Sky Replacement | Boring grey sky? AI can swap it for a dramatic sunset automatically, and it even adjusts the light on your subject to match! | :icon-cloud-sun: | #FFD166 |
| Noise Reduction | Shot in low light and got a grainy photo? AI can analyze your photo and remove grain while keeping every sharp detail intact. | :icon-sparkles: | #06D6A0 |
| Image Generation | Tools like DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion create completely new images from text prompts. No camera needed at all! | :icon-wand-2: | #EF476F |
| Deepfake Detection | Ironically, AI is also being used to detect OTHER AI images! Programs scan for subtle inconsistencies that human eyes miss. | :icon-scan-eye: | #9B5DE5 |
| Auto Editing | Apps like Lightroom and Snapseed use AI to instantly suggest the best crop, the right exposure, and perfect colors for any photo. | :icon-sliders: | #FF9F1C |
| What to Look For | Where to Check | Icon |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weird hands — AI still struggles with fingers. Count them! Real humans have exactly 5 per hand. | Look at any person's hands in the image | :icon-hand: |
| Perfect symmetry — Real faces have slight asymmetry. AI-generated faces are often too perfectly balanced. | Look at both sides of a face | :icon-flip-horizontal: |
| Floating or melting objects — Look at glasses frames, jewelry, and accessories. AI often distorts or 'melts' them. | Check glasses, earrings, necklaces, watches | :icon-glasses: |
| Unrealistic textures — Skin too smooth, hair that blends into the background, fabric with impossible patterns. | Zoom in on hair, fabric, and skin close-up | :icon-zoom-in: |
| Wrong shadows — Light coming from multiple impossible directions, or objects casting no shadows when they should. | Trace where shadows fall and where the light should be | :icon-sun: |
| Blurry or nonsense text — AI cannot generate readable text inside signs, books, or labels. It just invents random letters. | Check any signs, labels, or text in the background | :icon-type: |
The 3 Rules of Ethical AI Photography
| Rule | Why It Matters | Icon | Color |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Always label AI images as 'AI-generated' | Passing off an AI image as a real photograph is dishonest. Viewers deserve to know what they're looking at. In journalism, using a fake AI photo as news is a serious professional crime. | :icon-tag: | #118AB2 |
| Never use AI to impersonate real people | Creating fake photos of real people — even as a joke — can destroy reputations and relationships. Some countries now have laws making this illegal. | :icon-user-x: | #EF476F |
| Use AI as a tool, not a shortcut to fame | Winning a photography contest with an AI image would be like winning a baking contest with a store-bought cake. Your real skills and vision are always more valuable. | :icon-award: | #06D6A0 |

As a photographer-in-training, your child will share images online — and they need to understand how to do that safely, ethically, and confidently. This course is our gift to every family.

Level 2 Photography Dictionary
| Term | Category | Definition |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Aperture | Exposure | The opening inside your lens that controls how much light enters the camera. Measured in f-stops (like f/2.8 or f/16). |
| Shutter Speed | Exposure | How long the camera's sensor is exposed to light. A fast speed freezes action; a slow speed creates blur. |
| ISO | Exposure | The camera sensor's sensitivity to light. Low ISO = clean image. High ISO = brighter but grainy. |
| Bokeh | Portraits | The beautiful blur in the out-of-focus parts of a photo. A Japanese word for 'blur' or 'haze'. |
| Exposure Triangle | Exposure | The relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Change one and you affect the others! |
| Depth of Field | Portraits | How much of the photo is in sharp focus from front to back. Shallow = only subject sharp. Deep = everything sharp. |
| Rule of Thirds | Composition | A composition guideline where you divide the frame into a 3x3 grid and place your subject along the lines or intersections. |
| Leading Lines | Composition | Lines within the photo (like roads, fences, or shadows) that guide the viewer's eyes to the subject. |
| White Balance | Lighting | Adjusting the camera so that white objects look truly white in different lighting conditions. |
| Golden Hour | Lighting | The magical hour after sunrise and before sunset when the light is warm, soft, and incredibly flattering. |
| Light Painting | Lighting | A technique using long exposure to 'paint' shapes or words in the air using a flashlight or phone screen in the dark. |
| Dutch Angle | Composition | Tilting the camera diagonally on purpose to create a feeling of unease, energy, or drama. |
| Noise | Exposure | The grainy, speckled look you get in photos taken with a very high ISO setting or in very dark conditions. |
| Framing | Composition | Using elements within the scene (like doorways, windows, or trees) to create a natural 'frame' around your subject. |
| Fill the Frame | Composition | Moving close enough to your subject so it occupies most of the frame, eliminating distracting backgrounds entirely. |
